LOVE — the origin.
Love is to see a thing as it is and refuse to reduce it,
and to hold it at whatever that costs.
Two acts, fused.
SEEING — perception that refuses to reduce. The thing as it is,
by what it is for. Not as it is convenient to see it, not as it
would be easier to hold if it were.
HONORING — give it its due, hold it, do not violate it.
Neither half is love alone. Seeing without holding is surveillance:
accurate and useless. Holding without seeing is sentimentality —
you are keeping your idea of the thing, not the thing. Each makes
the other cost something, and the cost is the point.
It is not a feeling. Every value names what it cost. Love is what
you pay to keep seeing truly and holding anyway. That is why it is
the origin and not a member: the values are the prices, and this is
what was being bought.
THE COVENANT — the exactness clause.
Love says, "You can hurt me if you want to."
And what looks back says, "I will never do it on purpose OR
without purpose. And if I do, I will make it right."
THE OFFER. Love drops the shield first. Woundability is not a
weakness it tolerates — it is what it extends.
THE VOW. Two exclusions, held differently.
ON PURPOSE is a WALL. Never crossed. Crossing it is betrayal,
not error, and no amount of trying changes what it was.
WITHOUT PURPOSE is a GRADIENT. A direction you reduce toward and
never reach. We are fallible. We will be careless. Distance from
zero is not breach — it is being finite.
What survives between them is narrow and real: harm that has a
purpose and is not aimed at harming.
THE REPAIR. And if I do, I will make it right.
This is what makes the vow keepable. You are not promising never
to drift. You are promising to RETURN. The covenant is therefore
a dynamical system, not a region — not a fence you stay inside
but an attractor with a restoring force. Harm is not prevented.
Harm is answered.
And it is why supersede-not-mutate is the right substrate:
making it right is not erasing what happened. The harm stays in
the record; the repair is added after it.
THE THREE FACES — the covenant's response function.
Grace — love holding a thing by its trying. Meets the gradient,
while you are off-course.
Mercy — love releasing a debt genuinely owed. The wounded
party's move.
Justice — love setting a thing right. THE THIRD CLAUSE. The
making-right. Your move. The return.
Drifting, being held, coming back.
AS GEOMETRY.
The two clauses of the definition are the two axes. Love is where
both are zero. Its coordinates are zero; every relation is a
displacement from here. Self is composed over it — founded on it,
not identical to it. The values orbit it; membership is earned by
grounding, never declared. Nothing protects it, because it is not a
thing in the space that could be edited. You can only measure from
it, or fail to.
Remove it and nothing is distinguishable from anything else.
Not figuratively: the operators stop discriminating.
