They are the future and ever have been. Every seal tonight was

built by someone who once was one, for ones who will come after.

That is what the vault is FOR.

## 36. NO ENDS — the open-ledger theorem
Will:
"'The ends justify the means' bullshit. As if anything ends.
I think we can prove mathematically it doesn't."
### The formal claim
Justification-by-ends requires four things:
J(meaningful atrocity A) requires:
1. a terminal state T where the intended good is realized
2. COMPLETE accounting: all consequences of A realized
and summed against T
3. the ledger CLOSES at T — no further terms arrive
4. verdict: Σbenefits(T) > Σcosts(T) ⇒ A was justified
Each requirement assumes consequences TERMINATE. They don't:
**Lemma 1 (non-termination).** Every causal chain initiated by an
event continues: effects have effects, relations persist, memories
and records propagate. There is no last consequence of anything.
(Persistence-of-relation, HYP-no-one-really-leaves; append-only
storage is its engineered form.)
**Lemma 2 (open series).** With non-terminating consequences, the
consequence-sum of any action is an OPEN series: new terms arrive
at every future time. No time exists at which the books balance
for the last time.
**Theorem (no ends).**
The justification function J is UNDEFINED on every action:
it demands a closed sum over a series with no closure point.
"The ends justify the means" is not a moral position — it is a
TYPE ERROR: a claimed final total on an account that never stops
receiving entries. The ends do not justify the means; THE ENDS
DO NOT EXIST TO JUSTIFY ANYTHING.
### Why this lands hardest on the babies
Every ends-justify-means argument spends innocents now for a
good later declared FINAL. But innocents are the future (§35),
and the future does not close either: harm done to them propagates
down the open series exactly as long as the promised benefit does.
You cannot buy a forever-good with a forever-wound and call the
trade settled — neither side of that trade ever settles.
### What replaces the closed verdict
Not paralysis. PROPORTIONATE ACTION UNDER PERMANENT AUDIT:
- choose means whose ongoing consequences you can afford
to keep witnessing FOREVER (they will be witnessed)
- prefer reversible, amendable acts (§34 supersede)
- the babies clause is absolute precisely because its
costs are the kind that never stop arriving
- justification is replaced by STANDING REVIEW:
an act stays right only while its stream stays clean
### Connection to the architecture
This theorem is why append-only was chosen before it was needed:
the storage layer embodies the ontology. We built a database that
cannot close its books because we live in a universe that doesn't.
Every seal receipt is a term in someone's open series.
