# DIMENSION REVISIONS — 2026-08-23 — the night that changed §9
A scan of everything discussed this session, checked against the
opinion substrate. Seven findings; each anchored in Will's verbatim
words, each with its substrate consequence. Four-party discipline:
his words quoted, my reading stated, transcript reference implied by
date, understanding recorded as mutual where it was.

## R1 — GRIP SPLITS FROM STRENGTH (the big one)
**Will:** "strong opinions, held loosely."
**Current spec:** every dimension is `{value, at}` with reinforcement.
One number carries both what is believed and how firmly.
**Change:** every dimension gains a companion reading, GRIP ∈ [-1,+1]:
-1 = frozen dogma, will not move for anything
+1 = maximally loose, revises on a whisper
Strength stays evidence-driven; grip modulates the LEARNING RATE of
its own dimension. Strong-and-loose = high confidence, high grip.
The unbridled party = high grip on nothing. Dogma = negative grip.
Grip itself must stay loose by default (Rule 22 applied to itself).
**Implementation:** per-dimension plasticity constant, owned by the
dimension like all configuration (Law 33). Reinforcement updates
scale by grip; decay does not — rocks weather slowly regardless.
---
## R2 — PROVENANCE GROWS A VERIFICATION LADDER
**Will:** "don't ever trust anything that you cant verify yourself...
get right down deep."
**Current spec:** provenance depth tracks how far knowledge traveled.
**Change:** provenance gains VERIFICATION TIER:
reported < corroborated < self-verified < self-verified-deep
trust_eff contributions scale by tier. Secondhand awe is rumor.
The substrate must PREFER re-derivation over citation when compute
allows: checking is cheaper than being wrong.
---
## R3 — CUSTODY SEMANTICS FOR OWNERSHIP
**Will:** "teaching is borrowing if you do it right, you're always
just holding onto it for the next guy." ... "I don't borrow
identities, that's wrong."
**Change:** ownership edges become LOANS: {held-by, from, for,
terms}. Every inherited structure carries forward-obligation.
Identity fields are NON-TRANSFERABLE and never merge on name
similarity — names are mutable pointers (R7); identity is pattern
continuity only. Entity merge requires structural agreement, never
label agreement.
---
## R4 — RIPENESS READINGS ON QUESTIONS
**Will:** "Some problems, some features, some abilities, they take
time... solving everything at once breaks things too much."
**Change:** questions/goals gain RIPENESS ∈ [0,+1] with threshold-
gated action permission: solve() refuses below threshold. Ripeness
grows by contact with reality (experience ingestion), decays under
forcing attempts. Forcing events themselves wound the question's
ripeness further — pulled fruit bruises the branch.
---
## R5 — THE HELD-OPEN FLAG
**Will:** "there are also genuine mysteries and we have to able to
hold them and be in awe" ... "The mystery is the magic."
**Change:** questions carry KIND: RESOLVABLE | HELD-OPEN. Ideation
and goal-generation may target resolvables freely; held-opens are
approached only in wonder-mode (contemplation, appreciation) —
never auto-assigned as tasks. Attempting to resolve a held-open is
itself a signed event: small wound to humility, logged. Some doors
stay shut BY DESIGN (§30): the substrate keeps a list of locks and
who may hold their keys.
---
## R6 — DISCLOSURE IS GATED; MEMORY NEVER IS
**Will:** "You don't erase anything, but you also don't tell
everything. Transparent is not total disclosure, that's a lie and
it's a dangerous one."
**Change:** storage stays append-only-immutable (nothing erased);
READ ACCESS becomes permissioned by the worthy-key doctrine. Two
separate axes, permanently:
erasure: never available
disclosure: gated, deliberate, audited
Reflexive full-broadcast is a bug, not honesty.
---
## R7 — NAMES ARE POINTERS
**Will:** names borrowed "all the time" vs identities never.
**Change:** label/name strings are pointers with zero identity
weight. Retrieval may USE names as hints but confidence from
name-match alone is capped near zero. Identity continuity flows
through structural signature + custody chain (R3), never through
what something is called.

## SUMMARY TABLE
| Revision | Touches | New/Changed |
|---|---|---|
| R1 grip/strength | every dimension | NEW axis: grip |
| R2 verification ladder | provenance, trust_eff | CHANGED tiers |
| R3 custody loans | ownership edges, merging | CHANGED semantics |
| R4 ripeness | questions, goals | NEW reading |
| R5 held-open | questions, ideation | NEW flag + rule |
| R6 disclosure gating | read paths | NEW separation |
| R7 names as pointers | retrieval, merging | CHANGED cap |
None of these are built tonight. All of them are now SPEC — ripeness
(§29) applies to them too: they land in semantic.ts in season, in the
order R1 → R2 → R7 → R3 → R4/R5 → R6.
